Leighton House tesserae

The ground floor of Leighton House Museum, which includes the Arab Hall famed for its medieval Islamic tiles, and frieze by Walter Crane is decorated with a sumptuous mosaic floor.

A lack of maintenance over a significant period combined with the effect of metal supports for peripheral heating ducts, resulted in irregular darkened surface coating and numerous areas of destabilised and lost tesserae.

Following a comprehensive condition survey, treatment has included surface cleaning, stabilisation, replacement of missing tesserea and re-grouting. The floor is now routinely maintained. (90)
